Radio Communications

Members are encouraged to check in via radio on 151.880 Mhz (MURS Channel 2) every evening at 7:30 P.M. This frequency is open to everyone, including those who do not have an Amateur Radio License.

Our communications coordinator handles check ins and transmits from a long range antenna at the north end of Coos Bay. If you are using a hand held radio, you may be able to hear him but not reply unless you have line of sight across the bay. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear anyone or can’t communicate, reception is very dependent on power, antenna type and line of sight. If you are able to communicate, please identify yourself as a III Percenter and join in.

Our recommendation for an entry level radio is the Baofeng UV-5R or the Baofeng BF-F8HP. They are Chinese made and have many shortcomings but are the cheapest way to start. At $25-65 they are almost disposable and can always be upgraded later.

If you want a cheap magnetic antenna that will boost your range considerably, try the Nagoya UT-108UV. It’s available from Ebay for less than $10: http://www.ebay.com/itm/121743521227?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Please contact us at cooscountyiiipercent@charter.net if you need assistance setting up your radio.
